Printed Photography in Venezuela surveys more than 150 books and printed publications produced in Venezuela and is illustrated with 372 photographic reproductions. This publication was supported by the Institute for Studies on Latin American Art (ISLAA), New York.
As Sagrario Berti writes in the introduction, Printed Photography in Venezuela examines books and other printed materials illustrated with photographs published in Venezuela from the 1940s through 2016. The project traces the history of photographically illustrated publications in the country through the relationships between image, text, graphic design, publisher, and printer, highlighting how these disciplines converge within the space of the book.
The study explores a wide range of printed formats, including illustrated books, coffee-table books, magazines, foldouts, catalogs, posters, and photobooks. Through these publications, Berti considers the documentary subjects they present as well as the political, social, artistic, and national narratives embedded within both institutional and author-driven projects. The result is a broad and multifaceted reading that foregrounds collaboration and brings renewed attention to the book as a cultural and material object.
About the Author
Sagrario Berti is a photography historian and visual culture researcher. She holds an MA in Art History: Europe, Asia, and America from the University of Sussex and specialized in the registration, conservation, and archiving of photographic materials at the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film. She earned a BA in Arts with a concentration in Film from the Central University of Venezuela. Her research focuses on the cultural trajectories of photographs, archival materials, pre-Hispanic artifacts, and vernacular objects. She works as an independent researcher and writer.

“Fotografía impresa en Venezuela”, anota Sagrario Berti en la introducción de esta obra, “tiene como objeto de estudio el inventario de libros y otros materiales impresos ilustrados con fotografías publicados en Venezuela desde la década del cuarenta hasta 2016. La investigación intenta así trazar la historia de las publicaciones ilustradas con fotografías en el país, a través de la interpretación de los nexos entre imagen, texto, composición gráfica, editor e impresor; es decir, de la convivencia de estas disciplinas en los libros. […] Este trabajo busca esclarecer la direccionalidad de sentido propuesta en libros ilustrados con fotografía, coffee table books, revistas, desplegables, catálogos, carteles y fotolibros. Con tal propósito, examinamos la representación de temáticas documentales y recorremos las ideologías políticas, sociales, artísticas, o ideas de nación plasmadas en las iniciativas corporativas o autorales que les dieron forma. Presentamos, en suma, una lectura transversal y múltiple que apunta a la valoración del trabajo en conjunto y a visibilizar y hacer tangible el libro”.

Especialista en Registro, Conservación y Archivo de Material Fotográfico, Museo Internacional de la Fotografía y el Cine, George Eastman House (1994). Licenciada en Artes, mención cine, Universidad Central de Venezuela (1987). Sus líneas de investigación se centran en la trayectoria cultural de fotografías, material de archivo, artefactos prehispánicos y objetos artesanales. Trabaja de manera independiente.
