First published in 2005 by Sokyusha, In My Room is one of Ryudai Takano’s most recognized photographic series. In My Room Revisited returns to this body of work in a newly edited edition, bringing together photographs made between 1999 and 2004 in the photographer’s own apartment.

In these images, Takano invites his subjects into a simple studio-like space within his home, photographing them against a bright white backdrop. The series is structured through pairs of images that separate the upper and lower halves of the body. While the upper sections echo the conventions of portraiture, the lower-body images introduce moments of ambiguity that challenge assumptions about identity and gender. Through subtle gestures, posture, and fragments of the body, Takano encourages viewers to slow down and reconsider the act of looking itself.

Rather than defining his subjects, the photographs focus on what can be seen on the surface, capturing a moment before interpretation takes hold. The result is a quietly compelling meditation on observation, identity, and the uncertainties of perception.

This revisited edition includes texts by Michiko Kasahara and Duncan Wooldridge, with book design by Fuyuki Hashizume.
