In Alien in Midwest, Mexican artist Oswaldo García, currently based in Missouri, traces a quiet, personal navigation through the American Midwest, attending to moments where the familiar begins to feel estranged. Through images of roadside signs, peripheral spaces, and subdued landscapes, the book reflects on displacement not as rupture, but as a sustained condition of looking, moving, and not fully belonging.
Rather than framing the Midwest as subject, García approaches it as a field of observation, where meaning accumulates through small encounters and subtle dissonances. The photographs hold a certain distance, allowing the everyday to shift slightly, to register as both ordinary and quietly unfamiliar.
The publication extends this sensibility through its material form. Printed in risograph, the images take on a particular texture and tonal instability, shaped by color profiles designed by the artist. These choices introduce variation, layering, and a degree of unpredictability, reinforcing the book’s attention to perception, translation, and the act of seeing.
