EXCITING PHOTOGRAPHY NOW! is a 480 page survey of current American photography edited by Eve Lyons and Matthew Leifheit. The first ever open call in MATTE Magazine's decade-long history of supporting emerging artists, the issue is not only a document of current American photography, but a resource to students and anyone interested in learning more about pictures. Included in the survey are many of our favorite photos submitted. We also invited additional photographers whose work we knew to be in dialogue, commissioning poems, essays, and interviews, totaling 80 contributors in all.

Some of the things you will find inside: Dean Majd’s portraits of his chosen family, Lacey Lennon’s sequential works, a curation of submitted photographs in conversation with the work of Alec Soth, a conversation between Paul Mpagi Sepuya and his student Chanell Stone, poems by Paul Legault and H.D. with new works by James Welling, two portfolios of appropriated imagery by Dawn Kim, Farah Al Qasimi’s photographs of Detroit’s Arab American communities, two years in the life of Daniel Arnold, a conversation between Elliott Jerome Brown Jr. and Gioncarlo Valentine, Maridelis Morales Rosado’s pictures from Puerto Rico, P(ea) Guilmoth’s spectral hallucinations from Maine, Bobby Doherty’s flowers, Alyssa Kazew’s anthropomorphic fashion-tinged fantasy, Erinn Springer’s dispatches from the midwest, Donavon Smallwood’s journey tracing the migratory paths of monarch butterflies, and finally, an extensive portfolio of pictures from across the US, plus a few from Mexico and Canada. And much, much more.
