Please Disturb

Please Disturb brings together a collection of hotel door hangers and photographs recreating ordinary and unsettling scenes from the temporary lives of hotel guests.

For this project, Thomas Weil joins forces with Myosotis Carlier, sharing a mutual obsession with collecting hotel hangers. Both multidisciplinary artists, working across graphic design, writing, and photography, draw on archives shaped by their respective fathers, who were also compulsive collectors.

The book offers a fascinating panorama of graphic forms, each reflecting the era, location, and status of a hotel. The front of each hanger promises guests privacy, while the reverse invites staff to enter, clean the room, and erase all traces of their fleeting presence.

Beyond a visual archive, Please Disturb conjures imagined scenes of everyday and unsettling intimacy: a family on vacation, an exhausted businesswoman, a retired man, and a touring group. Through these fragments of temporary lives, the book explores the delicate boundary between privacy and intrusion, presence and disappearance.
