Diana, the scent of the Roman goddess, as imagined by the artist. If Diana's presence is upheld, she must have a scent. To exist is to carry one: it indicates life, even for hunters who attempt to hide.

A complex, elegant, unisex perfume telling its story over time, Diana transforms from celestial heights to a warm heart of woods. Fresh, spacious opening notes give the brisk air of an arrow whizzing by. Ozone, white pepper, galbanum, and mimosa place it in the forest’s green coolness. Immediately it drops down to earth where violets spring up among cedarwood, juniper, and fir. One of the most precious scents of the Victorian era, violet harmonizes a powdery earthiness with the magic of ionones, a molecular family that plays hide-and-seek with the nose. Within seconds of inhaling, most become anosmic to their violet smell. Minutes later, they may return: a portrait in scent of Diana, ever evading capture. Resting at the forest floor, patchouli mingles with petrichor, a rarely used aromatic compound formed when rain falls on dry soil after a lightning storm. Etymologically, petrichor comes from the Greek petra (stone) and ichor (fluid in the gods’ veins), giving a nod to Diana’s vitality.

Diana is a limited edition artwork by Marianna Maruyama, originally created for the Dutch royal palace-turned-museum, Paleis Het Loo. Only 108 bottles have been produced. The perfume is accompanied by the book Diana, artfully composed for the forest wanderer, animal advocate, or lover of Roman mythology. It elaborates on the elusive nature of Diana, goddess of the hunt and protectress of the forest, unpacking current and historical notions of hunting, the nature-culture split in western societies, and the role of Greek and Roman mythological figures in contemporary life.
