These images come from a gajō (“album of paintings”) in the private collection of Auguste Lesouëf (1829–1906), son of a gold and silver refiner, a learned member of the Society of Ethnography, an occasional traveller, and an avid bibliophile. The album comprises forty paintings in coloured washes and gold on paper, probably created by an artist in the nineteenth century, during Japan’s Edo period (1600–1868). Among the favourite subjects of ukiyo-e (“pictures of the floating world”), two genres focus particularly on nature: meisho-e (“paintings of famous places”) and kachō-ga (“flowers and birds”), celebrating landscapes, flora, and fauna.
