Lionel Derimais: Tokyo Subway 1987

Tokyo Subway 1987 by Lionel Derimais is a photographic zine published by Café Royal Books, documenting the everyday lives of commuters on Tokyo’s subway in 1987. Made while living in Japan, Derimais photographed passengers travelling in extraordinarily crowded carriages, capturing intimate moments in the close quarters of public transport. Working just inches away from his subjects, he recorded the quiet gestures, chance encounters, and everyday rituals unfolding within the crowded trains, offering a personal portrait of Tokyo life in the late 1980s.
