El Deseo de la Mujer es Subversivo (A Woman’s Desire Is Subversive) documents a vibrant period in Medellín’s feminist history during the 1980s, when women challenged patriarchal power and took to the streets to demand their rights through marches, graffiti, publications, and collective action.

Drawing on archival photographs and interviews with some of the women who led these initiatives, the publication revisits the spaces where they gathered, the ways they organized, and the messages that began appearing on the city’s walls in 1983. The book traces a movement shaped by the First Latin American and Caribbean Feminist Encuentro, held in Bogotá in 1981, where participants called for the first march against violence against women on November 25. The date later became the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, commemorating the Mirabal sisters, who were murdered under the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic.

The publication also features texts by Flora María Uribe, one of the founders of the feminist magazine Brujas. Las Mujeres Escriben, and writer Lina María Parra Ochoa, alongside reproductions of posters created for the First Latin American and Caribbean Feminist Encuentro and the first march against violence against women.
