Alex Cheung: Gate Keeping

Take a closer look at the rolling gates of businesses across New York City, and you’ll see “gate repair” stickers affixed on their sides. Across the five boroughs, storefronts are dotted with colorful mosaics created from these numerous stickers.

Rolling gates and gate repair stickers are both iconic visual features of the cityscape. The former reflects the after-hours setting, and the latter reflects the around-the-clock hustle of New York.
